How to Get to Daintree Rainforest: Airport, Ferry and Car

Getting to the Daintree Rainforest starts with choosing a destination beyond Cairns Airport: a transfer to your accommodation and transport between rainforest stops solve different needs.

  • Rainforest routes compared
  • River cruises and guided walks
  • Ferry and access explained

Choose your destination before choosing transport

Cairns Airport (CNS) is the arrival gateway for this journey. From there, decide whether you want a base in Port Douglas, a stay in Daintree Village or accommodation in the northern rainforest region around Cow Bay, Diwan or Cape Tribulation. These names describe different destinations. A booking addressed simply to Daintree needs a precise accommodation address before it becomes a useful arrival plan.

The national park has separate Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation sections, while the wider rainforest region also includes places outside those park boundaries. A transfer takes you to an agreed endpoint; it does not organise onward journeys between scattered boardwalks, beaches and river activities. Match your arrival transport to your plans for the following days, rather than deciding from the airport fare alone.

Taxi and transfers from Cairns Airport (CNS)

The airport lists taxis, ride booking, private shuttles and rental cars among its transport options. For a private transfer, specify the terminal, flight arrival, destination address, luggage and party size. Ask whether the quoted journey includes the ferry where needed, and establish how a delayed flight affects collection. This matters particularly when your accommodation lies beyond the river.

Published transfer guides viewed on 3 November 2026 give useful starting figures. A private CNS to Port Douglas sedan for 1 to 2 people is listed at 170 AUD, and an SUV for 1 to 4 people at 180 AUD. Separate Cairns routes list Daintree at 300 AUD and Cape Tribulation at 350 AUD for 1 to 4 people. Those Cairns route figures are not a quoted airport package or a return total; obtain a price for your actual address and ferry arrangements.

A published airport shuttle guide lists Port Douglas at 62 AUD one way or 119 AUD return for an adult. Allow about 1 to 1¼ hours without intermediate stops as the operator’s guide for this airport leg, plus connection time. Choose a departure for your actual arrival date rather than relying on an older timetable. Port Douglas arrival still leaves the rainforest excursion or onward transfer to arrange.

Car hire and parking

Car hire from Cairns Airport suits a trip linking your accommodation with different rainforest stops. Compare vehicles for the route you intend to drive and the luggage you will carry. Keep the arrival day manageable: collecting a car, making the road journey and joining a ferry queue are separate tasks, so a landing time is not a sensible promised arrival time at Cape Tribulation.

Queensland Parks describes the route from the ferry to Cape Tribulation as accessible by 2WD, with higher clearance helpful; farther north requires 4WD. This describes road suitability, not your rental contract. Check the current agreement for ferry use, unsealed roads, geographical restrictions and insurance conditions. Do not treat a vehicle badge as permission to use every road.

Drive on the left and use the designated parking areas for your chosen walks. QPWS identifies parking at Dubuji, Madja, Kulki and Mount Sorrow. Check local signs and vehicle restrictions when you arrive, and select a space that suits your vehicle rather than planning around a presumed large-vehicle bay. Read the dated road and works guide before fixing a northern route.

The ferry and the final part of the journey

The vehicle ferry crosses the Daintree River towards the northern rainforest and Cape Tribulation. For 2026/27, a car or utility costs 35 AUD one way or 57 AUD return. The crossing takes approximately 15 minutes including loading and unloading, with queueing additional. Keep that distinction in mind when arranging a walking activity or a return connection.

Download a digital ticket before leaving reliable reception. Online purchase is recommended, while tickets are also available at the southern booth or on the ferry. A return need not be made on the same day; ticket validity runs to 30 June of the relevant fee year. See the ferry guide for fares and the difference between the crossing and a wildlife cruise.

Public transport and a guided day from Port Douglas

As of 3 November 2026, airport bus route 100 is announced to begin on 23 November 2026 between CNS and Cairns City. It is a future airport service at this page’s information date, and its announced route is not a through journey to Cape Tribulation. Build your onward rainforest transport separately rather than treating the city bus as the whole connection.

The featured Port Douglas excursion is a guided day lasting 600 minutes, with hotel pickup and drop-off in Port Douglas only. Its inclusions cover a small-group local guide, morning tea, a cooked-to-order rainforest lunch and entry and national park fees. It suits a visitor already based in Port Douglas who wants an organised day. Arrange your airport arrival independently; compare other departures from Port Douglas if that is your chosen base.

Before travelling north, save your destination details and essential instructions offline. Mobile reception is very limited, and QPWS advises an additional emergency communication method. Carry drinking water, keep time available for weather and road delays, and use current Council and park notices when deciding whether to continue. A shorter programme is preferable to rushing the return after an unexpected queue.
