Understand the park before choosing an experience
Daintree National Park has two sections, Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation. It is part of the wider Daintree rainforest region, which also includes settlements and visitor facilities outside the meaning of a single park entrance. Plan your visit by the section and activities you want, rather than looking for one gate that covers every rainforest experience.
The Daintree belongs to the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage area, inscribed in 1988. This wider listing recognises the natural heritage of the region; it is not a separate World Heritage inscription solely for the Daintree. Its Gondwana connections describe the history of ecological lineages. They are a reason to look closely at the forest rather than an exact age for every tree.
The park is on Eastern Kuku Yalanji Country and is jointly managed. A responsible visit means staying on designated routes, leaving wildlife undisturbed and respecting cultural places. The choice between a self organised walk and a guided day concerns how you reach and understand these landscapes. It does not change the need to follow park instructions or local access notices.

Things to do in the northern park section
Cape Tribulation is the useful focus for the northern section. Kulki is a short route to a coastal viewpoint, with a 600 metre return distance and a ten minute QPWS guide time. Dubuji is 1.2 kilometres with an approximate forty five minute guide time. Its start and finish are separated by about 300 metres, so it is worth understanding the layout before setting out.
Madja is a 1.2 kilometre circuit with an approximate forty five minute guide time, passing through lowland rainforest and mangrove habitat beside Noah Creek. These are grade one routes. Wheelchair access on Kulki, Dubuji and Madja requires assistance. Choose according to your mobility and the landscape you want to see, rather than treating all boardwalks as identical.
Jindalba is a 650 metre return walk, grade two, with a forty five minute guide time. Wheelchair access to the creek is from the exit end only. Mount Sorrow is a different undertaking: seven kilometres return, about six hours and grade four, for experienced, very fit and well prepared walkers. Use the walking guide to match the route to your preparation.
Public walks and a paid rainforest facility
The Daintree Discovery Centre is a separate paid visitor facility with a canopy tower, aerial walkway, interpretive displays and forest circuits. The published tariff valid to March 2027 is 41 AUD for adults and 19 AUD for children aged five to seventeen. Treat this as the price of that facility, not the price of entering the entire Daintree National Park.
The centre ticket includes access to the canopy tower and aerial walkway, interpretive displays, self guided audio tours in eight languages, an interpretive guide book and a seven day re-entry pass. Transport to and from the centre is excluded. Its one day validity label is not the duration of a guided tour. This option fits a visitor arranging their own travel who wants interpretation at a dedicated facility.
For a broader guided day, the nine hour rainforest and gorge option includes hotel pickup and drop off, a wildlife cruise, morning tea, BBQ lunch, Noah Valley entry, park fees and Mossman Gorge entry. The twelve hour coast and rainforest option includes a beach walk at Cape Tribulation, an Alexandra Lookout photo opportunity, a river wildlife cruise, tropical lunch, fruit ice cream and a guided rainforest walk at Mossman Gorge. Compare those included activities with the more focused centre visit.
Access, fees and the ferry
Public walking access, transport and commercial facilities are separate planning decisions. Camping requires a permit before staying overnight. A centre admission ticket, camping booking or tour booking applies to the activity purchased; use the specific access information for the place you intend to visit. Do not build a budget around a single region-wide admission charge.
The ferry connects the southern approach with the northern coast. The crossing takes approximately fifteen minutes including loading and unloading, with waiting time additional. For 2026/27, the published car fare is 35 AUD one way or 57 AUD return. A guided tour may include the crossing as part of its programme; self drivers should plan it as a separate transport item. See getting there for arrival and vehicle decisions.
Mossman Gorge
Mossman Gorge is the southern park section and needs its own access planning. A Rainforest Circuit closure has been announced for 9 November to 15 December 2026; this is a local closure, not a closure of the whole national park. Continue to Mossman Gorge for the visit.
Safety and local conditions
Year round stinger and crocodile warnings apply. Crocodiles can occur in the sea as well as freshwater, so a beach or creek is not a swimming recommendation. Keep to designated paths, carry what you need and allow for limited mobile reception. Check current QPWS and Douglas Shire notices for the individual route before leaving, especially after rain.
Daintree National Park questions
Is the visitor centre ticket a national park pass?
It covers the separate Discovery Centre facility, including its tower, walkway and interpretation. Transport is excluded.
Are all rainforest walks easy boardwalks?
Short boardwalks differ from Mount Sorrow, a grade four route of seven kilometres return for experienced, very fit walkers.
Does the announced Rainforest Circuit closure cover Cape Tribulation?
The announced 9 November to 15 December 2026 closure concerns the Rainforest Circuit at Mossman Gorge. Consult the notices for your chosen northern route separately.
